Formulas
Gross Area= Wall Length × Wall Height × Number of Walls
Net Area= Gross Area - (Windows × Window Area) - (Doors × Door Area)
Plaster Volume = Net Area × Thickness × Number of Coats
Cement Bags= Volume × (1 / Total Ratio Parts) × Cement Factor
Sand Volume= Volume × (Sand Parts / Total Ratio Parts) × Sand Factor
Worked Example
4 walls 12 ft × 10 ft, 10mm thick, 2 coats, 1:5 mix, 2 windows + 1 door:
- Gross Area: 4 × 12 × 10 = 480 sq ft
- Deductions: (2 × 15) + (1 × 21) = 51 sq ft
- Net Area: 480 - 51 = 429 sq ft
- Volume (10mm, 2 coats): 429 × 0.0328 × 2 = 28.1 cu ft
- Cement: ~20 bags (50 kg) for 1:5 mix
- Sand: ~1.0 cu yd
Mix Ratio Guide
- 1:4 — External plaster, high-strength areas, damp-prone walls
- 1:5 — Internal walls, general-purpose plastering
- 1:6 — Internal smooth finish, backing coat, economy applications
Pro Tips
- Dampen walls 24 hours before plastering for better adhesion
- Apply scratch coat first for thick plaster jobs (>12mm)
- Use chicken mesh at joints between different materials
- Temperature should be 5-35°C during application and curing
- Keep plastered surfaces damp for 7 days after application
