Spraying covers ~400-500 sq ft/hr but uses ~20% more paint due to overspray. Best for large areas and smooth surfaces.
Brushing covers ~100-150 sq ft/hr. Best for trim, detail work, and small areas. Most control but slowest method.

Finish Guide

  • Matte: Hides imperfections, no shine. Best for ceilings and low-traffic rooms.
  • Eggshell: Slight sheen, easy to clean. Ideal for living rooms and bedrooms.
  • Satin: Soft lustre, durable. Great for kitchens, bathrooms, and hallways.
  • Semi-Gloss: Reflective, moisture-resistant. Perfect for trim, doors, and cabinets.
  • High-Gloss: Mirror-like, hardest finish. Best for accent walls and furniture.

Surface Prep Checklist

  • New Drywall: Always prime (PVA primer). Skim coat joints if needed.
  • Previously Painted: Clean with TSP, sand glossy surfaces, spot-prime repairs.
  • Stained: Use stain-block primer (oil or shellac-based). May need 2 coats.
  • Textured: Use thick-nap roller (3/4"-1"), budget 20-30% extra paint.

Application Tips

  • Temperature matters: 50-85°F (10-30°C) is ideal for latex paint application.
  • Humidity above 85% slows drying significantly and may cause bubbling.
  • Always paint ceilings first, then walls, then trim for clean lines.
  • Cut in edges with a brush before rolling for a professional finish.
  • Maintain a wet edge to avoid lap marks — never stop mid-wall.

Common Mistakes

  • Skipping primer on new drywall — causes uneven sheen and poor adhesion.
  • Applying coats too thick — leads to drips, longer dry times, and cracking.
  • Ignoring dry time between coats — minimum 2-4 hours, 24 hrs for oil-based.
  • Using interior paint outside (or vice versa) — different UV and moisture resistance.
  • Not buying enough paint — always add 10-15% waste factor for cutting, touch-ups.
