🧱 Masonry Calculator PRO
Calculate bricks, mortar, wall ties, lintel steel, reinforcement, and total cost for any masonry wall.
Dimension Diagram — updates as you type
Net wall area (minus openings) divided by the block face gives the unit count. Mortar follows from joints.

No openings added. Click "+ Add Opening" to deduct windows or doors.
4🔩 Lintel Steel Calculation
Steel lintels are required above all openings. Calculation based on standard 4" bearing each side.
Add openings above to calculate lintel requirements.
5 🔗 Wall Ties & Reinforcement
Code: Ties spaced max 24" o.c. vertically & horizontally (IRC R608.10). Rows at each course or every other course.
Wall ties not required for this wall type.

How to Calculate Bricks, Mortar & Reinforcement for Masonry Walls
Show formulas, brick specs & worked examples ▼
Brick Specifications
| Type | Actual (in) | Nominal (in) | Bricks/sqft (½" joint) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Modular | 7⅝ × 2¼ × 3⅝ | 8 × 2⅝ × 4 | 6.75 |
| King | 7⅝ × 2¾ × 2⅝ | 9⅞ × 3⅛ × 2¾ | 5.76 |
| Queen | 7⅝ × 2¾ × 3⅝ | 8 × 3⅛ × 4 | 6.75 |
| Jumbo | 7⅝ × 3⅝ × 2⅝ | 8 × 4 × 3 | 5.56 |
| Closure | 7⅝ × 3⅝ × 3⅝ | 8 × 4 × 4 | 4.50 |
| Norwegian | 7⅝ × 3⅝ × 11⅝ | 8 × 4 × 12 | 1.50 |
Formulas
Gross Area = Length × Height
Net Area= Gross Area − Sum of All Openings
Bricks Needed= Net Area × Bricks/sqft × Wythe Factor × (1 + Waste%)
Mortar Volume= Net Area × (Joint Size / 12) × (Brick Height / 12) × (Brick Width / 12) × Wythe Factor
Cement (bags)= Mortar Volume × Ratio Cement Part ÷ 1 ft³/bag
Sand (cu yd)= Mortar Volume × Ratio Sand Part ÷ 27
Wall Ties= ⌈Length ÷ Tie Spacing⌉ × ⌈Height ÷ 16⌉
Lintel Length= Opening Width + 8" (4" bearing each side)
Lintel Steel= Lintel Length (in) × Weight per inch (kg/in)
Worked Example — Cavity Wall with Openings
30 ft × 10 ft cavity wall, Modular brick, ½" joint, 1:4 mortar, 2 windows (36"×48") + 1 door (36"×84"):
- Gross area: 30 × 10 = 300 sqft
- Window openings: 2 × (3 × 4) = 24 sqft
- Door opening: 1 × (3 × 7) = 21 sqft
- Net area: 300 − 24 − 21 = 255 sqft
- Bricks (double wythe × 2): 255 × 6.75 × 2 × 1.05 = 3,607 pcs
- Mortar: 255 × 0.042 × 2 = 21.4 cuft
- Cement (1:4): 21.4 × 0.25 = 6 bags
- Sand: 21.4 × 0.75 ÷ 27 = 0.59 cu yd
- Wall ties (16" o.c.): 23 rows × 23 ties = 529 ties
- Lintels: (36+8) + (36+8) + (36+8) = 132" = 3.36m
Mortar Ratios — When to Use
- 1:3 — Structural masonry, load-bearing walls, foundations, below-grade work
- 1:4 — General-purpose, most exterior and interior walls, parapets
- 1:6 — Non-load-bearing, partitions, garden walls, decorative work
Wall Types Explained
- Single Wythe — One layer of brick (4"–4.5" thick). Most common for garden walls and non-structural partitions.
- Double Wythe — Two layers laid together (8"–9" thick). Stronger load-bearing capacity.
- Cavity Wall — Two wythes with an air gap (drainage cavity). Best weather resistance. Requires wall ties.
- Veneer — One wythe brick tied to a structural frame (wood, steel, concrete). Most common in modern construction.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Not subtracting openings — overestimates bricks by 10-15%
- Wrong joint size — ⅜" vs ½" changes brick count by ~5%
- Using wrong mortar ratio for structural vs non-structural applications
- Skip lintel calculation — every opening needs steel support above
- Ignoring control joints — leads to cracking from thermal expansion
- Not ordering enough wall ties for cavity walls
Pro Tips
- Order 5-10% extra bricks for cuts and breakage
- Mix mortar in small batches — pot life is 1-2 hours
- Pre-wet bricks on hot days to prevent suction from weak mortar bond
- Use a string line for every course — ensures straight, consistent joints
- Control joints: max 20 ft spacing for walls under 20 ft height
- Expansion joints: max 30 ft for walls exposed to temperature extremes
- Check local building codes for lintel and tie requirements
