Formulas
Area = Length × Width
Mulch Volume= Area × Depth (convert inches to feet)
Gravel Volume= Area × Depth × 0.05 (tons per sq ft per inch)
Plant Count= Area / (Spacing in ft)²
Topsoil Tons= Area × Depth (ft) × 1.2 (density factor)
Turf Guide
- Bermuda: Full sun, drought-tolerant, warm climates (Zones 7-10)
- Fescue: Shade-tolerant, cool-season, moderate water needs
- St. Augustine: Tropical, shade-tolerant, high water needs
- Zoysia: Dense, low-maintenance, full sun to partial shade
Worked Example
20 ft × 15 ft mulch bed, 3 in deep, edge restraint:
- Area: 20 × 15 = 300 sq ft
- Mulch volume: 300 × (3/12) = 75 cu ft = 2.78 cu yd
- Edge: 2 × (20 + 15) = 70 ft
- Topsoil (4 in): 300 × (4/12) × 1.2 = 1.2 tons
Pro Tips
- Order 10% extra mulch/gravel to account for settling and irregular edges
- Apply mulch 2-3 inches deep — deeper can cause root rot
- Use landscape fabric under gravel beds to prevent weed growth
- Install edge restraints before filling beds with material
- For turf, ensure soil is graded and compacted before laying sod
