Pavers= Area ÷ Paver Area × (1 + Pattern Waste%)
Sand= Area × Depth × 0.05 (tons per inch-sqft)
Gravel= Area × Depth × 0.08 (tons per inch-sqft)
Edge Restraints= Perimeter of area = 2 × (Length + Width)
Pattern Waste Guide
- Herringbone (10%): Classic interlocking V-pattern — most durable, highest cut waste
- Running Bond (5%): Offset rows like brick — simple, minimal waste
- Stacked Bond (5%): Grid pattern — easiest install, very low waste
Paver Size Reference
- 4×8 in: Standard brick size — classic look, versatile
- 6×6 in: Square — modern geometric pattern
- 6×9 in: Roman-style — elegant proportions
- 8×8 in: Large square — fewer pieces, faster install
- 12×12 in: Flagstone style — minimal joints, premium look
Base Depth Guidelines
- Walkways: 4" gravel + 1" sand — pedestrian traffic only
- Patios: 4-6" gravel + 1" sand — standard residential
- Driveways: 8-12" gravel + 1" sand — vehicle loads, compact in layers
Common Mistakes
- Skipping edge restraints — pavers will shift and spread over time
- Insufficient gravel base — causes settling, pooling, and uneven surfaces
- Not compacting base — each gravel layer should be compacted separately
- Using playground sand — masonry sand is finer and creates a smoother bedding layer
