One cubic yard covers about 100 sq ft at 3 inches — the most useful landscaping fact there is.

yards = area × depth ÷ 324

1 Bed Area & Depth

3 in is the sweet spot for weed suppression. 1 cu yd covers ~100 sq ft at 3 in.

How to Calculate Mulch Needed

Show formula and worked example ▼

Formula

Cubic yards= Area (sq ft) × Depth (in) ÷ 324 × (1 + waste)

Bags= Cubic feet ÷ bag size (2 cu ft bark, 0.8–1.5 cu ft rubber)

Worked Example

100 sq ft at 3 in: 100 × 3 ÷ 324 = 0.93 cu yd→ order 1 yard, or 13 bags.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Mulch volcanoes against tree trunks
  • Eyeballing depth across large beds
  • Buying bags for multi-yard jobs
  • Forgetting 10–20% settling

Nothing deflates a Saturday like the third trip to the garden center because the beds drank more bark than you guessed. Our free mulch calculator converts bed area and depth into bulk cubic yards and 2-cubic-foot bag counts, plus cost either way — so you can decide up front whether delivery or bags win.

Enter the total bed area in square feet and the mulch depth in inches (3 inches is the sweet spot for weed suppression without suffocating roots). Add your bulk price per cubic yard and bag price. Results show cubic yards, bags, and both costs side by side. The rule of thumb baked in: one cubic yard covers about 100 square feet at 3 inches deep.

📖 Comment Utiliser Ce Calculateur

1

Step 1: Measure Bed Area

Measure each bed length times width in feet and add them. For circles, use 3.14 × radius × radius.

2

Step 2: Choose Depth

Use 3 inches for weed control in established beds, 4 to 6 for new playground or slope areas. Never exceed 4 inches against tree trunks.

3

Step 3: Compare Bulk vs Bags

Enter both prices. Bulk wins above roughly 3 to 4 cubic yards; bags win for top-ups under a yard.

4

Step 4: Order

Round bulk orders up to the half yard — piles settle, and the leftover top-dresses the thinnest bed.

📐 Comment Le Volume Est Calculé

Cubic feet = area (sq ft) × depth (in) ÷ 12, then cubic yards = cubic feet ÷ 27 — combined as area × depth ÷ 324. Bags are 2 cubic feet each: bags = cubic feet ÷ 2, rounded up. A 100 sq ft bed at 3 inches needs 25 cubic feet — just under one cubic yard, or 13 bags.

⚠️ Erreurs Courantes à Éviter

✕

Mulch volcanoes around trees

✓ Keep mulch 3 to 6 inches from trunks. Piled bark traps moisture against bark and invites rot and rodents.

✕

Eyeballing depth

✓ An inch of error across 500 sq ft swings the order by 1.5 cubic yards. Stick a ruler in the existing bed before ordering.

✕

Buying bags for big jobs

✓ Above 3 to 4 yards, bulk delivery is usually half the per-yard cost of bags — plus no plastic to haul away.

✕

Forgetting settling

✓ Fresh bark settles 10 to 20 percent in the first month. Order the full depth, not the settled depth.

💡 Conseils Professionnels

✓

Lay cardboard or landscape fabric under new beds to double weed suppression.

✓

Water mulch after spreading to knit it together against washouts.

✓

Top-dress, do not replace: an inch of fresh mulch yearly beats a full tear-out.

✓

Dyed mulches fade in full sun — natural bark ages more gracefully on south beds.

❓ Questions Fréquentes

100 × 3 ÷ 324 = 0.93 cubic yards — order 1 yard, or 13 two-cubic-foot bags.

2 to 3 inches for established beds, up to 4 for new plantings. Keep it shallow near stems and trunks.

Bulk is usually far cheaper per yard above 3 to 4 cubic yards. Bags make sense for top-ups under one yard.

Top-dress yearly with an inch. Full replacement is rarely needed unless drainage or weed fabric failed.

🏗️ Applications Réelles

Mulch math covers flower beds, tree rings, playground safety surfacing, slope erosion control, and commercial landscapes. Landscapers bidding maintenance contracts run these numbers per property, while homeowners use the bag count to decide whether the SUV makes one trip or two. Fall is prime time — beds mulched before winter hold moisture and suppress spring weeds.

Our free mulch calculator converts bed area and depth into bulk cubic yards, bag counts, and cost. Use it for flower beds, tree rings, playgrounds, and slopes with 2-cubic-foot bag math. Enter area and depth for an instant bulk-vs-bags comparison.
