Formula
Board Feet= (Thickness(in) × Width(in) × Length(ft)) ÷ 12 × Quantity
Volume (cu ft) = Board Feet ÷ 12
Weight= Volume (cu ft) × Species Density (lb/ft³)
Species Density Reference (lb/ft³)
- Pine: 35 — Lightweight, soft, affordable framing lumber
- Spruce: 30 — Very lightweight, used for trims and light framing
- Oak: 47 — Heavy hardwood, excellent for furniture and flooring
- Cedar: 33 — Naturally rot-resistant, ideal for outdoor projects
- Maple: 44 — Dense hardwood, great for cabinets and butcher blocks
Grade Guide
- Construction (#2): Standard structural use, knots allowed, most economical
- Standard (#1): Fewer/smaller knots, better appearance, moderate premium
- Select/Common (Clear): Minimal defects, premium appearance grade, highest cost
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Confusing board feet with linear feet — BF accounts for thickness, width, and length
- Forgetting waste factor — always add 5-15% for cuts and defects
- Not ordering enough — lumber yards may not have full stock on hand
- Ignoring wood moisture content — green lumber is heavier and may warp when drying
