Insulation Selection Guide

Formula

Area to Cover= Base Area × (1 + Waste%)

Rolls Needed= Area to Cover ÷ Coverage Per Roll

Batts= Area to Cover ÷ (Batt Width × Stud Length)

Coverage Rates by Type

  • Fiberglass Batt: 88.6 sqft/roll (16" OC), 59.1 sqft/roll (24" OC)
  • Rock Wool: 59.2 sqft/roll — denser, better fire resistance
  • Foam Board: 32 sqft/sheet (4×8) — rigid, moisture resistant
  • Spray Foam: ~200 sqft/can (1" thick) — excellent air seal
  • Cellulose: ~25 sqft/bag (blown) — eco-friendly, fills gaps

R-Value Reference

  • R-11: 2×4 interior walls — minimal insulation requirement
  • R-13: 2×4 exterior walls — standard wall insulation
  • R-19: 2×6 walls and floor joists — upgraded wall insulation
  • R-30: Attic floor — standard attic insulation (code in most areas)
  • R-38: Attic floor — cold climate upgrade
  • R-49: Attic floor — extreme cold climates, premium efficiency

Common Mistakes

  • Compressing batts into spaces too small — reduces R-value significantly
  • Leaving gaps — even small gaps let air bypass insulation
  • Ignoring moisture — fiberglass in direct contact with condensation surfaces molds
  • Wrong R-value for climate zone — check local building code requirements
