How to Calculate Board Feet
Show formula and worked example ▼
Formula
Board feet= Thickness (in) × Width (in) × Length (ft) ÷ 12
One board foot = 144 cubic inches. Always use nominal sizes.
Worked Example
Forty 2×6×12 boards: 2 × 6 × 12 ÷ 12 = 12 bf each→ 480 bf total. At $1.50/bf =$720.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Using actual instead of nominal dimensions
- Mixing inches and feet in one formula
- Entering MBF price as per-board-foot price
- No waste allowance on cut lists

Lumber is bought and sold by the board foot, but boards are labeled by nominal size — and mixing the two up is how estimates go wrong. Our free board foot calculator converts any thickness, width, length, and piece count into exact board feet and cost. One board foot equals 144 cubic inches of wood, the volume of a 1-inch-thick, 12-inch-wide, 1-foot-long board.
Enter the nominal thickness and width in inches, the length in feet, and the number of pieces. The calculator applies the lumber rule — thickness times width times length divided by 12 — and multiplies by your price per board foot. It works for framing lumber, deck boards, beams, pickets, and hardwood stock alike.
📖 Bu Hesaplayıcı Nasıl Kullanılır
Step 1: Enter Nominal Dimensions
Type thickness and width in inches exactly as labeled (2x4, 1x6, 4x8). Board feet always use nominal, not actual, sizes.
Step 2: Enter Length and Pieces
Type the board length in feet and how many pieces you need.
Step 3: Add Price
Enter your price per board foot (or per thousand, MBF, divided by 1000) to get the total cost.
Step 4: Review Volume
Results show board feet per piece, total board feet, and total cost.
📐 Board Foot Formülü
Board feet = Thickness (in) × Width (in) × Length (ft) ÷ 12. A 2x6x12 board is 2 × 6 × 12 ÷ 12 = 12 board feet. Forty of them total 480 board feet. The divisor 12 comes from the definition: a 1x12x1 board is exactly one board foot (1 × 12 × 1 ÷ 12 = 1). Always use nominal dimensions — a "2x4" counts as 2 by 4 even though it actually measures 1.5 by 3.5 inches.
⚠️ Kaçınılacak Hatalar
Using actual instead of nominal sizes
✓ A 2x4 is 1.5x3.5 actual, but board feet use 2x4 nominal. Using actual sizes undercounts volume by over 30 percent.
Mixing inches and feet
✓ Thickness and width stay in inches; only length converts to feet. A 2x4x96-inch board must be entered as 8 feet.
Forgetting MBF conversion
✓ Wholesale prices quote per thousand board feet (MBF). Divide the MBF price by 1000 before entering it as price per board foot.
Ignoring waste on cut lists
✓ Board feet measure volume, not usable yield. Add 10 to 15 percent when cutting short pieces from long stock.
💡 Profesyonel İpuçları
Hardwoods are often sold by the quarter system (4/4, 8/4) — 4/4 means 1 inch thick nominal.
Random-length hardwood is tallied by actual measured footage, so measure each board.
For beams, compare board-foot cost against laminated options — LVLs often win on long spans.
Keep cut-off shorts sorted by length; they become blocking, cripples, and fire stops.
❓ Sık Sorular
2 × 4 × 8 ÷ 12 = 5.33 board feet per stud. A bundle of 100 studs is 533 board feet.
MBF means one thousand board feet, the standard wholesale unit. A $900/MBF price equals $0.90 per board foot.
Nominal — the size on the label. Board-foot tallies have used nominal sizes for over a century.
Compute each board size separately (decking, joists, beams) and add them. A typical 16x20 ft deck runs 600 to 900 board feet of framing plus decking.
🏗️ Gerçek Uygulamalar
Board feet are the currency of lumber yards, sawmills, and hardwood dealers. Contractors convert framing take-offs to board feet to compare supplier quotes, woodworkers tally project stock before buying rough lumber, and fence builders price picket packages by the thousand. Anywhere wood is bought in volume, this calculation decides the budget.
Our free board foot calculator converts any lumber size to board feet and cost instantly. Use it for framing studs, deck boards, beams, fence pickets, and hardwood stock with nominal dimensions. Enter thickness, width, length, and quantity for exact volume and MBF pricing.
