- Mortar counted (1 bag per ~35 blocks)
- Half blocks planned for corners and bond
How to Calculate Blocks, Mortar & Grout
Show formulas and worked example ▼
Formulas
Blocks= Wall area ÷ 0.889 (16×8 in face with joints), + 5%
Mortar= Blocks ÷ 35 bags (80 lb)
Grout yards= Blocks × 0.2 cu ft × fill fraction ÷ 27
Worked Example
20×4 ft wall, full grout: 80 ÷ 0.889 = 90 → 95 blocks, 3 mortar bags, 95 × 0.2 ÷ 27 =0.70 cu yd grout.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Counting gross area with openings
- Forgetting mortar entirely
- Underestimating grout in cores
- No waste on corner cuts

Block walls punish rough guesses twice: too few blocks stalls the mason, and grout is unforgiving to estimate by eye. Our free block wall calculator counts standard 8x8x16 CMU units from wall dimensions, bags of mortar at one bag per 35 blocks, and grout volume for ungrouted, half-grouted, or fully grouted cores — with waste and pricing throughout.
Enter wall length and height, set the grout fill level (none for dry-stack garden walls, half for typical reinforced walls, full for retaining and structural walls), and price your blocks, mortar bags, and grout per cubic yard. A standard block face covers 0.889 square feet including the mortar joint, which is the constant behind every count.
📖 Comment Utiliser Ce Calculateur
Step 1: Enter Wall Dimensions
Type wall length and height in feet. For walls with openings, subtract door and window area from the gross first.
Step 2: Choose Grout Fill
Select none, half, or full core grouting. Retaining walls and tall structural walls typically need full grout with rebar.
Step 3: Price Materials
Enter block price each, mortar price per 80 lb bag, and grout price per cubic yard from your supplier.
Step 4: Review the Order
Results show block count with waste, mortar bags, grout cubic yards, and total material cost.
📐 Comment Parpaings, Mortier et Coulis Sont Calculés
A nominal 16x8-inch block face covers 128 ÷ 144 = 0.889 sq ft including joints, so blocks = wall area ÷ 0.889, plus 5 percent waste. Mortar runs about one 80 lb bag per 35 blocks. A fully grouted 8-inch block holds roughly 0.2 cubic feet of grout, so grout yards = blocks × 0.2 × fill fraction ÷ 27. A 20x4 ft garden wall needs 90 blocks, 3 bags of mortar, and 0.67 yards of grout when fully filled.
⚠️ Erreurs Courantes à Éviter
Counting gross area with openings
✓ Doors, windows, and gates delete whole blocks. Deduct opening area before dividing, not after ordering.
Forgetting mortar
✓ Ninety blocks need three bags. Mortar is cheap; a stalled mason waiting on mortar is not.
Underestimating grout
✓ Grout hides in every core. A fully grouted 8-inch wall eats 0.2 cubic feet per block — measure twice, order once.
No waste on split courses
✓ Corners, ends, and bond beams force half-block cuts. Five percent waste is the minimum on any wall with corners.
💡 Conseils Professionnels
Dry-lay the first course to check layout before mixing a single bag of mortar.
Use half blocks at corners to maintain running bond without cutting every course.
Install joint reinforcement every other course on tall garden walls.
Keep blocks dry — wet CMU weakens mortar bond and stains the finished face.
❓ Questions Fréquentes
80 sq ft ÷ 0.889 = 90 blocks, plus 5 percent waste = 95 blocks. Add 3 bags of mortar.
Roughly one 80 lb bag per 30 to 40 blocks with standard 3/8-inch joints. This calculator uses one per 35.
No. Garden walls often need none; reinforced and retaining walls need partial or full grout with rebar per TMS 402 and local code.
Materials run roughly $3 to $6 per square foot of wall (blocks, mortar, grout). Installed, expect $10 to $25 per square foot depending on height and region.
🏗️ Applications Réelles
Block estimates cover garden walls, retaining walls, garage walls, shed foundations, and privacy walls. DIYers build garden and shed walls in a weekend with a single pallet of blocks; contractors use the same math scaled to thousands of units for commercial shells. Retaining walls add drainage stone and geogrid behind the math shown here.
Our free block wall calculator counts CMU units, mortar bags, and grout fill for any concrete block wall. Use it for garden walls, retaining walls, garages, and foundations with none, half, or full core grouting. Enter dimensions for an instant material order with waste and cost.
